The Green Difference
Through outdoor learning experiences, real world interdisciplinary projects, and diverse leadership opportunities,
BGA empowers our students to create a more just and sustainable world.
We are proud to be a Thompson Island multi-year partner school. All of our middle schoolers stay on Thompson Island for an immersive 3-day learning adventure each fall and a 1-day team building and leadership experience each spring. Thompson Island Outward Bound ignites curiosity and allows students to push past their preconceived ideas of what they can achieve.
Green Interdisciplinary Exhibitions
We challenge all of our students and educators to grapple with important environmental, social, and economic issues while empowering them to create change in their own lives and beyond. Each grade level digs deeply into a sustainability issue through real world learning experiences (field trips, data collection, interviews, research) and presents their findings and solutions at their end of year exhibition. Watch our video to see our 11th graders and their "Green Action Expo"!
Senior Internships: During Term 4, all seniors complete a 6-week, full-time internship in a sustainability field of their choice.
Environmental Science Career and
Technical Education Pathway
Boston Green Academy is the only high school in the Boston Public Schools to offer an Environmental Science & Technology career pathway program. Students who complete this pathway are prepared to continue their education in college or enter the workforce in a variety of environmental fields and to investigate real-world environmental issues. Graduates of the Environmental Science pathway program are certified in First Aid and CPR, 10-hour OSHA general industry safety certificate, and OSHA 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations. Students are also trained in wastewater and drinking water technologies, and are prepared to take the Massachusetts Class II Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators and Massachusetts Grade I Drinking Water Treatment Exams administered by the State of Massachusetts. The program culminates in a 6-week internship with an environmental organization or company of their choice. Updated course list coming soon.
Earthshot Prize 2022
On Thursday, December 1st, the night before dignitaries and international stars walked the green carpet at Boston’s gleaming new MGM music venue in the Fenway to present, perform, or witness the Earthshot Award presentations, an equally inspiring story was unfolding 7 miles away at the JFK Library in Dorchester. In honor of the Earthshots, the event’s planning committee conceived of a youth-focused companion event--a Town Hall--that would highlight youth voices and the work that they are doing both in and out of school to learn and lead in the fight against climate change.
Here is the video of the JFK Library event. The entire program is worth watching--especially the beginning video of the Moonshot announcement by President Kennedy and the address by Hannah Jones, CEO of Earthshot--but if you want to jump ahead to the student presentations, the clock is 31.07.
