Athletics
Boston Green Academy is committed to excellence in athletics as part of a larger commitment to excellence in education. As a student athlete here at Boston Green Academy, it is our belief that athletics promotes character and teaches values. It is our goal that this athletic program will allow the following for all student athletes:
-
Successful completion of all academic requirements.
-
Ability to compete in an environment encouraging constructive and developmental growth.
-
To build an understanding of pride and community involvement.
-
Offering 15+ sports teams, we will continue to expand our BGA/Boston United program and co-op with Brighton High School.
BGA has an existing partnership with Brighton High School for athletics that will continue for the 2023-2024 school year. We are excited to announce that BGA will be adding five sports teams this year as part of our Boston United Co-Op with the Mary Lyon and Josiah Quincy Upper School: girls volleyball, indoor track, wrestling, boys volleyball, and outdoor track. This is in addition to our current boys and girls basketball programs. We will continue to co-op with Brighton High school for all other sports.
An important update regarding student sports teams for the upcoming school year:
Effective now, students in grades 6-9 (next year's grade levels) will be exclusively part of the Boston United teams for all available sports. This means they will not be able to participate in the same sport for the Brighton co-op next year and in the following years. In cases where a Boston United team is not available for a specific sport, these students may participate in the co-op with Brighton.
For students in grades 10-12 next year, a unique arrangement applies. Those who competed for Brighton last year will have the option to choose whether to continue with the Boston United team or remain with the Brighton co-op. This transition will only affect those who have previously competed for Brighton.
It's important to note that this change will not require any students to transfer schools. Students can continue to take advantage of this opportunity without the need for school transfers.
This adjustment aims to streamline and enhance our student sports programs, and we believe it will lead to a more cohesive and rewarding experience for everyone involved.
Students who would like to participate in sports teams must satisfy the following eligibility requirements:
Consent/Medical Forms to be Completed
-
BPS Student Participation Parental Consent Form
-
Physical Examination Form
-
Within 13 months of athletic participation
-
ASPEN Registration/Sign-up
-
Academic Requirements
Students must earn a 2.0* (or above) weighted GPA for the marking period prior to the athletic season and maintain the 2.0 (or above) weighted GPA throughout the participating athletic season. For fall sports, eligibility shall be determined using final grades from the previous year.
**If a student-athlete does not meet the Boston Green Academy minimum 2.0 weighted GPA, but otherwise satisfies the BPS/MIAA requirements and the student-athlete has a significant mitigating reason(s) for his/her/their failure to attain a 2.0 weighted GPA , the Head of School may consider allowing that student-athlete to participate on a probationary basis. A Request for Athletic Participation on a Probationary Basis form must be completed (with all necessary signatures) and submitted to the Head of School. A meeting between the student-athlete, the parent/guardian, the coach and the headmaster may be required; and a success-plan will be formulated.
